The Prison Liberation was the first level I built when I started at Massive. It was used as the featured side mission in our First Playable milestone. Designing around a 1 - 1 match with the environment and making sure each space can comfortably fit 4 players was something that I never had to worry about before. It was certainly a challenge at first but overall I am pretty happy with the way it came out. It’s always great when the mood and pacing you are going for actually make it to the final game. My initial idea was to have dozens of prisoners in these stacked containers with side paths/flanks connecting the space. It would make for a dominating reveal when you first enter. I wanted the NPCs reaching out and screaming in pain to add a sense of urgency and consequence for players to rescue them. The art style is extremely dark to match the mood of the mission.
